RD4: Smart tools with conformal cooling

The aim of this demonstrator is to improve performance and reduce the overall cost of metal tools (for forging, casting, etc.) by combining the best of several additive manufacturing technologies. The approach consists of creating a 3D support with optimized topology, integrating complex cooling channels that conform to the shape of the part (“conformal cooling”) and lattice structures to make it lighter. Resistant coatings are then applied by DED deposition only on functional surfaces, thus extending the service life of the tooling.
